If you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s a quick plot:
Two films so utterly insane, strait jackets should be required! First, see what happens when a film started by the director of “The Giant Spider Invasion” is finished by Herschell Gordon Lewis, the man who made “Two Thousand Maniacs.” Yup, it’s “Monster-a-Go-Go” (1965, 69 min.), a screwy sci-fi obscurity in which an astronaut goes up but a ten-foot, crusty-faced creature comes back to stalk sexy sunbathers, strangle scientists, attack twist-party teens, and spew radiation that leaves his victims “shriveled up like a dried prune.” It’ll dig through your brain like a cinematic lobotomy! Then strap on the seatbelts for the most maddening, jaw-dropping, mind-bending piece of celluloid lunacy ever to play American theaters. It’s “Psyched by the 4-D Witch” (1972, 81 min.), in which innocent little Cindy becomes possessed by the sex-crazed spirit of a Salem witch while her brother becomes “The King of Sex Vampires.” A crackpot oddity told almost entirely in LSD-style psychedelic effects, this was advertised as “A Psychic Freakout from the Underground.” Warning: repeated viewings may cause chromosome damage and flashbacks!

If you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s a quick plot:
As a genre-buster, Six-String Samurai–just your average, run-of-the-mill postapocalyptic kung-fu-rock & roll road movie–has a lot going for it. The film takes place in a Soviet-ruled America (they nuked the U.S. in 1957; with the exception of Lost Vegas [sic] and the badlands around it, the country is a Soviet territory). It revolves around Buddy (Jeffrey Falcon, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Buddy Holly), a guitar-slinger-swordsman who’s on his way to Vegas, where he plans to succeed the just-deceased Elvis as the King. Along the way, he picks up an orphaned preteen traveling companion, and the pair’s qust leads them to confront various Mad Max-style pop-culture weirdos, the Red Army, and Death–a rival guitarist who looks suspiciously like Guns n’ Roses’ Slash.

Falcon’s background is in Hong Kong cinema, and it shows in this made-on-a-shoestring production, filmed mostly in Palm Springs and Death Valley. (He certainly had enough opportunities to influnce the production, since, besides playing the lead, Falcon pitched in as cowriter, coproducer, production designer, and costume designer on the film.) Despite the limited budget, the movie is generally entertaining, though it could probably stand to lose a couple of go-nowhere subplots that account for about 15 minutes of the 91-minute running time. –Randy Silver

The innate lyricism of the score is beautifully captured by conductor Richard Bonynge and enhanced by sets and costumes recalling the late nineteenth century.

Everyone in Desperate Living’s Mortville has some horrible secret to hide. The mentally unstable Peggy Gravel (Mink Stole, in a superb display of overacting) and her 300-pound-plus maid Grizelda must take it on the lam after Grizelda smothers Peggy’s husband under her elephantine buttocks. They find themselves in Mortville, a shanty fiefdom ruled by the grotesqu QUn Carlotta (the incomparable Edith Massey). The evil qUn delights in tormenting her subjects, but Peggy and Grizelda soon team up with a pair of lesbian outcasts, and a rebellion is in the air. John Waters’s Desperate Living takes on the air of a seedy, trash fairy tale as the humiliated residents of Mortville rise up against the qUn and the cursed princess finds herself in a power struggle against her mother. Notable for the absence of Waters regular Divine, this movie pushes the rest of the cast to their over-the-top best. Fifties sex bomb Liz Renay has a great time as Muffy St. Jacqus, half of the lesbian couple, and was still looking great by the ’70s. The tumbledown sets of Mortville add a surreal touch to the movie, but Edith Massey steals every scene she’s in as the hateful, repulsive QUn Carlotta. Note that the actors’ breath is clearly visible in many scenes; it was filmed outdoors in a bitter Baltimore winter. Nasty, shabby, gross, and hilarious, this is John Waters at his best. –Jerry Renshaw
